The existing sliding patio door was showing its age and no longer gave the homeowner the clean appearance or the smooth operation they wanted. The older frame and the trim around it had worn from years of exposure, so the door was handled as a complete replacement rather than a repair.

Before any demolition began, we reviewed the opening and the surrounding siding so the replacement could be planned without unnecessary disturbance to the exterior. The goal was to set a new door while keeping the wall framing, the siding and the interior finishes protected.

Before

The original unit sat in a large exterior opening, with the frame and trim worn from years of weather. We evaluated how the old assembly was attached and how the new door would fit the opening, which keeps surprises out of the demolition and limits damage to the surrounding siding and wall framing.

Protecting the room and removing the old door

Before anything came out, the interior was closed off from dust and debris with plastic sheeting and tape. That matters more than usual on a job like this, because a large exterior opening stays open while the work is under way. The old door and frame were then removed completely to expose the rough opening, and loose material and old sealant were cleared away so the sill, jambs and header could be inspected and the new unit could sit against a clean, prepared surface.

Setting the new door

With the opening prepared, the new sliding glass door was staged and checked against it before anything was fastened. The frame was positioned, leveled, squared and secured to the structure, then the sliding panel and the lock were operated and adjusted before any finish work started. Getting the alignment right at this stage is what lets the panel slide correctly and the hardware latch as intended.

Trim inside and out

New exterior trim was installed around the door to finish the opening and create a clean transition to the existing siding, with the joints and edges prepared for sealing and final paint. Inside, new trim covered the installation gap and tied the door back to the existing walls and hardwood floor. The door was operated again after the finish work to confirm nothing interfered with the sliding panel.

Finished result

The homeowner has a new sliding patio door that looks cleaner and operates smoothly, with a new frame, glass, trim and perimeter sealing making the opening more weather-resistant than it was. The work was completed while preserving the surrounding siding and interior finishes as much as possible, and the large glass area brings plenty of natural light into the room.
